MMCA Seoul is close to the Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of the major palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. During the site excavation, the foundations of the Gyeongkeun-dang House and Okcheop-dang House of the office of the royal genealogy of the Joseon Dynasty were “found in good condition”. The office of the royal genealogy was transformed into a building of 302 chambers in the 1860s, only two of which now remain: Gyeongkeun-dang and Okcheop-dang, which were moved near to the Jeongdok Library in 1981. They were registered as cultural properties of Korea and moved back to their original locations to become part of this MMCA Seoul museum complex.

UNstudio and DA group were selected as the winners of the competition for the chungnam art museum in south korea. the project breaks away from the traditional art museums while serving as a fully captivating hub for arts and culture. it intends to become a place that continuously grows and develops, a station of inspiration and participation, as well as one of the first zero-energy museums in korea.
Apart from UNstudio and DA group, the winning consortium also includes squint/opera (digital content and exhibition design), loos van vliet (landscape design), and UNsense (community content). the project will invite people to communicate, providing them with vibrant spaces where art and technology harmoniously coexist, maximizing visitors’ interactions. the architects sought to generate a vibrant performing center that opens up a new vision for the future of the community.
The architects have included two defining landmarks in the design: a plateaued central courtyard and the cultural boulevard. both parts are vital for generating communication spaces, serving as locating points, enabling people to immerse in a continuous experience from multiple routes and angles. the cultural boulevard serves as a wayfinding element while offering links throughout the site; it joins the cultural areas and marks the central routes through the building and into the courtyard. the smooth connection among the cultural boulevard, arts center, and library also animates the public functions. meanwhile, the whole structure maintains a visual balance with the surrounding scenery and the mountains behind.

So-called "white paintings" are in museums all across the world and Robert Ryman's all-white painting "Bridge" sold for a record $20.6 million at a Christie's auction in 2015. How are these seemingly plain white paintings considered art and why is it that not anyone can pick up a tube of white paint and make one?
We talk to Elisabeth Sherman, an assistant curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York about why there is much more to these paintings than meets the eye, and while you could have painted on of these priceless pieces of art, you didn't.

What is contemporary art? In this course, you’ll explore this question through more than 70 works of art made from 1980 to the present, with a focus on art of the last decade. You’ll hear directly from artists, architects, and designers from around the globe about their creative processes, materials, and inspiration.
3D printed glass and sculptures made of fiber. Dance performed in the factory and the museum. Hacking into television and video games. Portraits made with paint or artificial intelligence. Intimate explorations of the body and collective actions. In this course, you’ll learn about artworks in both traditional and surprising mediums, all drawn from the collection of The Museum of Modern Art. Each week we’ll look at contemporary art from a different theme: Media from Television to the Internet, Territories & Transit, Materials & Making, Agency, and Power.
Artists invite us into their studios and out into their neighborhoods, and to experiment with the materials they use. Not only will you develop a deeper understanding of artists’ practices today but also some of the many ways they respond to pressing issues and questions of our time. By taking this course, you’ll gain confidence to look at contemporary art wherever you encounter it and make connections to your own life or creative practice.

Japanese artist Masako Miki's installation “Hyakki Yagyo, Night of a 100 Demons” is composed of felted sculptures, painted murals, and floor vinyls. It has been on display at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023 in the Meridians sector, presented by Ryan Lee Gallery and Cult Aimee Friberg.
“Presented as an enchanted parade for a vibrant world, Masako Miki’s immersive site-specific installation explores the intersection of mythology and contemporary social issues: challenging the notion of fixed identity by embracing dualities. Comprised of a set of felted wool sculptures, the semi-abstracted shapes achieved in bright colors and playful textures refer to the natural world and Tsukumogami shapeshifters (forgotten household items that become supernatural spirit entities). Serving as a bridge to engage the viewer, they evoke personal memories and connections to generate a sense of empathy. These fluid characters are rooted in Shinto animism, each representing constantly shifting mythologies within our segmented, plural reality.
Masako Miki (b. 1974 Osaka, Japan) is a multimedia artist whose work ranges installation and large-scale sculpture, printmaking, watercolor and felting.
